Social anxiety refers to an overwhelming fear or discomfort in social situations. It's more than just feeling shy or nervous; it involves an intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or scrutinised in social interactions. People with social anxiety may feel extremely self-conscious, leading to avoidance of social gatherings or situations.

Causes of Social anxiety

Social anxiety can stem from various factors. Past experiences of ridicule, bullying, or social rejection can contribute. Additionally, genetics, brain chemistry, and upbringing can play a role. Traumatic social encounters or a lack of social skills during formative years might also contribute to its development.

Symptoms of Social Anxiety

Symptoms of social anxiety can manifest physically, emotionally, and behaviourally.

Physical Symptoms:

  • Sweating excessively
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Blushing or feeling flushed
  • Upset stomach or nausea
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty catching breath or shortness of breath
  • Dry mouth or throat constriction

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Intense fear or anxiety in social situations
  • Constant worry about being judged or embarrassed
  • Fear of social interactions or avoidance of social gatherings
  • Overwhelming self-consciousness
  • Irrational or excessive fear of humiliation or criticism
  • Persistent anticipation of negative outcomes in social settings

Behavioural Symptoms:

  • Avoidance of social situations or events
  • Difficulty making eye contact or speaking in public
  • Overanalysing social interactions after they occur
  • Difficulty initiating conversations or feeling tongue-tied in social settings
  • Isolating oneself from social activities or withdrawing from social connections
  • Experiencing panic attacks in social situations

Who is Susceptible to Social Anxiety?

Social anxiety can affect anyone, but certain factors might increase vulnerability. People who've had traumatic social experiences, those with a family history of anxiety, individuals with a more reserved temperament, or those who've faced significant life stressors may be more susceptible.

How Can Counselling Help?

Counselling can be immensely beneficial. It provides a safe space to explore and understand the roots of social anxiety. Through counselling, individuals learn coping mechanisms, challenge irrational thoughts, and develop skills to manage anxiety in social situations. It also offers ongoing support and guidance throughout the recovery process.
